Manitoba Ag Days Seminar Session Highlights: Thursday
Thursday, January 19th, 2017 brings the 3rd and final day of the 40th anniversary Manitoba Ag Days 2017 show. The program will kickoff at 9:00 am in the FCC Theatre with Keith Gabert, Agronomy Specialist, Canola Council of Canada speaking on “Sclerotinia – The Other White Combine”. At 9:45 am, Holly Derksen, Field Crop Pathologist, Manitoba Agriculture, will speak to “Navigating The Fungal Jungle” with a disease update. At 10:15 am, Brent Elliott, Infestation Control and Sanitation Officer, Canadian Grain Commission will discuss how to “Protect the Quality of Your Stored Grain from Insect Infestation”. To wrap up the morning sessions in the FCC Theatre at 11:00 am, Drew Lerner, Senior Agricultural Meteorologists, World Weather Inc. will address the burning question of, “ Will the Weather Extremes Persist on the Prairies”?
The MNP Theatre will get started at 9:00 am with John Heard, Crop Nutrition Specialist, Manitoba Agriculture speaking on the “Benefits of Pulse Crops in the Rotation”. Directly following, Dr. Don Flaten, Professor, University of Manitoba will address the topic of “Are All Phosphates Created Equal”? At 10:30 am Sean Goertzen, Climate Initiative Co-ordinator, Keystone Agricultural Producers will discuss Carbon Pricing: “Making It Work For Farmers”. Finishing off the morning, a panel discussion consisting of Fred Greig, Producer and Owner/Operator of Avondale Seeds, Jason Voogt, Agronomist and Owner/Operator of Field 2 Field Agronomy Inc. and Lynn Sweeney, Assistant Vice-President of Quality Assurance & Food Safety for Richardson International will speak on” Managing Wheat Classes Profitably’.
Thursday afternoon in the FCC Theatre will begin at 1:00 pm with Marla Riekman, Soil Management Specialist, Manitoba Agriculture speaking on “New Tillage Techniques”. Following Marla, Adam Gurr, Producer/On Farm Researcher, Agritruth Research will cover the topic on “Controlled Traffic Farming – A Manitoba Experience”. At 2:30 pm to close out the afternoon sessions in the FCC Theatre, Dr. John Gavloski, Entomologist, Manitoba Agriculture will present on “Two Steps Forward, One Step Back: Challenges for IPM in Prairie Agriculture”.
At 1:00 pm in the MNP Theatre, Matt Bolley, Tax Specialist, MNP LLP will cover “The 10 Tax Traps for Succession Planning”. At 1:30 pm, Dr. Tom Jensen, Director, North America Program, International Plant Nutrition Institute will speak about “Climate Change and Shifts in Crops”. Following Tom, Dr. Rigas Karamanos will engage the crowd with “Let’s Play Micros”. To Close out the show in the MNP Theatre, Dr. Mario Tenuta, Professor, University of Manitoba will speak on “Nitrogen Loss When Applied at Shallow Depths”.
That concludes the program for #agdays17. The wide range of outstanding speakers were an excellent complement to our 40th Anniversary Celebration. Stay tuned to see what the program committee has in store for #agdays18 program!
