 Title: Managing Weeds in an Organic System

Speaker(s): Dilshan Benaragama – University of Manitoba

Dr. Benaragama was recently hired as an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba when the Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF), Manitoba Crop Alliance (MCA), Manitoba Canola Growers Association (MCGA) and Manitoba Pulse & Soybean Growers (MPSG) funded a new Manitoba Crop Protection Chair in Weed Management. Benaragama, who completed his graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan in weed science, has focused his research program on understanding weed adaptations to diverse crop management practices and developing integrated management strategies

Speaker(s): Joanne Thiessen Martens – University of Manitoba

Dr. Thiessen Martens is a new Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba. She completed both undergrad and PhD degrees at the University. Her research focuses on nutrient flows in agroecosystems, including agronomic and environmental aspects. She is especially interested in phosphorus dynamics in soils and plants, as well as nutrient dynamics in all kinds of ecological farming systems.

 

Title: Group Discussion on Cover Cropping

Led by Zack Koscielny, Green Beach Farm & Food

Zack is a full time farmer who farms with his family near Strathclair, MB. He was raised on a farm that raised pure bred Charolais cattle. The operation has since evolved into a commercial cow-calf operation with substantial direct market sales of grass fed beef and naturally raised pork. The land was certified in 2020 and since then, Zack has added organic grains to the mix.
