Manitoba Ag Days Seminar Highlights: Thursday

Thursday, January 23rd, 2020 brings the third and final day of the Manitoba Ag Days 2020 show. The program will kick off at 9:00 am in the FCC Theatre with a presentation on “Modern High Yielding Cropping Systems” from Don Flaten, Professor at the University of Manitoba. At 9:30 am, Soil Fertility Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development, John Heard, will give a “2020 View of Fertilizer Guidelines for Manitoba”. At 10:00 am, Anastasia Kubinec, Manager of Crop Industry Development with Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development will speak about “Reaching for the Top!” Directly following, Stephen Crittenden, Soil Scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada will speak about “The R’s of Soil and Water Quality”. Closing out the morning sessions, Soil Management Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development, Marla Riekman will give a presentation on “Building a Resilient Soil”.

The MNP Theatre will get started at 9:00 am with Professor from the University of Manitoba, Yvonne Lawley with a presentation on “Cover Crops – Making it work in Manitoba”. At 9:45 am, Scott Chalmers, Diversification Specialist with Westman Agricultural Diversification Organization (WAD)) will speak about being “On the Frontiers of Regenerative Ag”. At 10:15 am, hear Lana Shaw, Scientist from the South East Research Farm speak on “Mixed Grain Intercropping – Why and How”. Closing out the morning session in the MNP theatre, Kris Nichols, Soil Microbiologist with Kri-Systems will speak on “Regenerative Ag: The Soil Biological Approach”.

Thursday afternoon in the FCC Theatre will begin at 1:00 pm with Dr. Alejandro Costamagna, Professor, Department of Entomology at the University of Manitoba, with a presentation on “The Wild Side of Pest Management”. At 1:45 pm, Weed Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development, Tammy Jones will speak on how “Losing the Weed Battle Could Mean Losing the Farm”. Directly following, at 3:15 pm, Taras Lychuk and Alan Moulin, Scientists from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada will answer the question, “How do we Adapt to Changing Conditions”.

At 1:00 pm in the MNP Theatre, Peter Manness, Farm Management Consultant with MNP will tell us how “Farming is Risky Business”. At 1:30 pm, Entomologist with Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development, John Gavloski will speak about “Grasshoppers, Cutworms and Flea Beetles: Forecasts, Monitoring and Management”. Directly following,, at 2:15 pm, David Kaminski, Extension Plant Pathologist with Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development will tell us about “What Diseases are Lurking?” Closing out the afternoon sessions in the MNP theatre, Marla Riekman, Soil Management Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development will speak about how ”All this salt is making me thirsty! How to cope with Salinity”.

Manitoba Ag Days Seminar Highlights: Wednesday

In the FCC theatre at 9:00 am, the Manitoba Wheat and Barley Growers Association (MWBGA) program gets started with an update from their board chair, Fred Greig. At 9:10 am, Santosh Kumar, Wheat Breeder with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada will provide details on “Wheat Breeding for the Canadian Prairies”. Managing Director with the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre, Peter Watts will deliver his presentation on “Meeting Quality Specifications for Malting Barley Selection” at 10:00 am. Closing out the morning sessions, Jonathon Driedger, Senior Market Analyst with LeftField Commodity Research will speak on “What Really Matters in Grain Markets, Today and Tomorrow”.  

The afternoon sessions in the FCC theatre will get started at 1:00 pm with Elaine Froese, Farm Family Coach with her presentation on “Finding Fairness in Farm Transition”. Directly following, Neil Townsend, Chief Market Analyst with FarmLink Marketing will give an update on “Canada’s Trade and Market Access”. At 3:00 pm, hear about “Volatility – How YOUR Cropping Decisions can Help!” from Darren Bond, Farm Management Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development. At 4:00 pm, Rex Murphy of the National Speakers Bureau Inc. will close out the afternoon session delivery to the crowd his update on “Agriculture Today – Remarks from Rex Murphy.

In the MNP Theatre at 9:00 am we will hear about “Clearing the Confusion on Biostimulants” from Jarrett Chambers, President for ATP Nutrition. Jarrett will then speak again at 9:30 am on how “NutriScan – Real Time Soil Diagnostics has Arrived”. Directly following, at 10:00 am, owner of Taurus Agricultural Marketing Inc., Craig Davidson, will speak on “Researching Sustainable Innovations for the Future – Can it Benefit the Consumer?” At 11:00 am, Dan Aberhart, President of Aberhart Ag Solutions will give a presentation on Bio-Sul: The One Millionth Acre. Patrick Brawner, Agronomy Manager/Product Manager with Nachurs Alpine Solutions will speak at 11:30 am about “What is Your limiting factor”? Closing out the morning sessions, Scott Walker, Research and Development Coordinator with DSW Enterprises and Consulting will give us the “Biological Stimulants 101” at 12:00 am.

Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 pm learn about “Farmland and the Tax Man” from Stino Scaletta, Partner of Taxation Services with MNP. At 1:30 pm, hear Dr. Keri Hudson Reykdal, Veterinarian, also known as Dr. Keri: Prairie Vet and Hudson Reykdal Veterinary Services give a presentation on “Raising Livestock Under A Magnifying Glass”. Directly following, don’t miss the opportunity to take a look into “The Crystal Ball of Cattle Markets” with Manager of Canfax, Brian Perillat. At 3:00 pm, Tyler Fewings, a producer from Tilston, MB will deliver his presentation on “Filling the gaps; My CYL Mentorship”. Closing out the afternoon sessions is Livestock Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development, Raymond Bittner will speak on “Cows, Calves, Cameras and More”!

Manitoba Ag Days Seminar Highlights: Tuesday
It has been a year in the making and the seminar program committee has done another extraordinary job organizing the 2020 Manitoba Ag Days Program. You will want to visit www.agdays.com ahead of time to review the program agenda. Over 60 speakers will touch on an assortment of important topics for today’s farming operations throughout the three days of the show. The seminars will take place in both the MNP and FCC theatres conveniently located inside the Brandon Keystone Centre.
The FCC theatre will be conveniently located at the south end of the Westoba Place Arena. We will kick off Tuesday morning’s Manitoba Canola Growers Association Program with Agronomy Specialists with Canola Council of Canada, Angela Brackenreed and Warren Ward. Their presentation titled “Breaking YOUR Yield Barrier, Considerations for an Ambitious Yield Target” begins at 9:00 am. At 10:00 am, Justine Cornelsen and Dan Orchard, Agronomy Specialists with Canola Council of Canada, will speak about “Clubroot – The Silver Bullet….A Shotgun”. Closing out the morning program in the FCC theatre, Drew Lerner, Senior Agricultural Meteorologist with World Weather Inc. will present on the 2020 Weather: Is Drought in the Prairies Over?”
Ag Days Gives Back Award presentations will kick off the afternoon in the FCC Theater at 12:30 pm. Directly following, we will hear from Manitoba Dignitaries, The Honourable Brian Pallister, Premier of Manitoba, The Honourable Blaine Pedersen, Minister of Agriculture and Resource Development and His Worship Rick Chrest, Mayor of City of Brandon at 12:45 pm. At 2:00 pm we will have three youth speakers, Joyrn Buchanan of Crystal City, Hanna Popp of Erickson and Laruen McKee of Brookdale giving their presentation titled “Agriculture; More that Cows, Sows and Plows”. Directly following, Craig Klemmer, Principal Agricultural Economist with FCC will speak on “Trade, Dollar, and Interest Rates: What does it all mean?” At 3:00 pm, hear about “Innovative Hiring: The Value of Your Work Force” from Managing Partner of Hebert Grain Ventures, Kistjan Hebert. Closing out the afternoon, at 4:00 pm, B. Douglas Tait, Lawyer with TDS Law will deliver his presentation on “Cyber Security and Data Protection”.
The MNP theatre is located in the amphitheater next to MNP Hall across from Westoba Place Arena. Tuesday morning’s program will focus on Technology and Innovation. Starting things off at 9:00 am is Teresa Vallotton, Co-President of FarmFemmes with a presentation titled “AI in Ag is More Than What it Used to Mean”. At 9:45 am, Melissa Silvernagle, Precision Agronomy Technical Lead with AgraCity Crop & Nutrition Ltd. will speak about “Digital Scouting in Agriculture: The Future is Now”. Directly follow, Kristjan Hebert, Managing Partner of Hebert Grain Ventures will speak at 10:30 am about a “Return on Investment (How Technology has Changed our Farm and our Bottom Line)”. Closing out the morning sessions in the MNP theatre at 11:30 am learn answers to the question “We’ve Got the Data, Now What?” from our producer panel with Adam Gurr and Mark Keating.
The Tuesday afternoon’s program kicks off at 1:00 pm with a panel discussion with Tere Stykalo, Regional Ag Leader with MNP about “The 5 Key Components of Your Succession Plan”. At 1:40 join, Jason Willner, with DOT Technology Corp, and “SeeDotRun: The Evolution to Autonomous Farming”. Directly following, at 2:40 pm, Ryan Hutchison, Crop Intelligence Business Development Lead with South Country Equipment, will present on “Trusting the Data:; Proactive use of Soil Moisture Information. At 3:30 pm, Spencer Myers, Machinery Reporter with Glacier FarmMedia & The Manitoba Co-operator will give a presentation titled “Reinventing the Wheel: Machinery – Past, Present and Future”. Wrapping up the afternoon sessions at 4:15 pm, Lionel Kaskiw, Farm Production Advisor with Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development and Angela Brackenreed, Agronomy Specialist with Canola Council of Canada will give a summary of how “Tough Harvests Teach us Lessons”.

24 Hours until Show Time!
It is less than 24 hours until show time! The final touches are being put into place and all 540,000 square feet of Keystone Centre has been transformed into Canada’s Largest indoor farm show! At 5pm tonight the red carpet will be laid as we prepare for over 40,000 guests to enter the building over the course of the next three days.
Manitoba Ag Days show theme is Technology and Innovations in Agriculture. Manitoba Ag Days will be launching the New Innovation Showcase to highlight the greatest new technologies and innovation changing our industry. There are over 32 participants in 7 categories vowing for the title of “Advance the field of Agriculture”.
The 43rd Annual Manitoba Ag Days begins tomorrow morning at 7 am with the Kick Off Breakfast at the Canad Inn’s Roadhouse. Proceeds’ from tomorrow’s breakfast go directly to the Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba.
