What to look for on Thursday – Ag Days 2023

“The first two days of Ag Days 2023 are filled with dynamic speakers and interactive panel discussions and cover a wide variety of subjects. Looking forward to Thursday’s program, it is about agronomy!  If you want Crop Talk, Thursday’s speaker schedule is for you!” commented Kristen Phillips, Manitoba Ag Days General Manager.

The FCC Theatre program starts with a session with just that title on Thursday at 9:00AM. Crop Talk features land management, cereals and pulse and soybean specialists and will discuss what worked well and what didn’t in 2022. If you want More Crop Talk, check back in at 1:45PM for a discussion on weeds, diseases and insects, and how to get the edge in 2023. This is your opportunity to “ask a specialist”, as both Crop Talk panels will be answering audience questions.  In between the Crop Talk sessions, make sure to take in Josh Linville at 11:00AM as he helps us with Understanding the International Fertilizer Landscape.

If you are interested in soybeans, peas or pulses, the MNP Theatre is the place to be on Thursday morning for the Manitoba Pulse and Soybean Growers Program. Four sessions will get specific about management decisions, including seeding rates, row widths and rotations. In the afternoon, we turn our eyes to the future for the Innovation and Technology Program. At 2:30PM you will hear from Doug Cole about sustainable aviation fuel, how it is produced and why Manitoba is the jurisdiction of choice. Then at 3:15PM, be prepared to consider farming of the future as venture capital agronomist, Scott Day highlights Ag Tech That Could Change Everything.

Thursday is the last day to see over 550 exhibitors, talk to the 32 contenders in the Innovation Showcase, and see the best genetics from the farms participating in this years’ Bull Congress.  Of course, Thursday is also the last day to purchase 50/50 tickets!  The jackpot is growing and tickets are on sale until 11:59 on Thursday, January 18, 2023 and can be purchased at www.agdays.com/buy5050 or at the show through our mobile sellers or at the top of the ramp. What to look for on Wednesday – Ag Days 2023

Manitoba Ag Days is Canada’s largest indoor farm show and the board and management team is excited to welcome guests to the Keystone Center in Brandon, MB. Kristen Phillips, Manitoba Ag Days General Manager said, “The show highlights the best of all things agriculture! Evan Shout of Hebert Group jumpstarts the program in the FCC Theatre on Wednesday, January 18th at 9:00AM by challenging us with the notion that Change is Constant – Dream Big and Innovate Fast. At 10:00AM J.P. Gervais from Farm Credit Canada, will offer his insights into Inflation Navigation. The Manitoba Crop Alliance Program begins at 1:00PM and offers a well-rounded series of sessions ranging from management and marketing to plant breeding and disease. If you have ever wanted to see an Olympian and TV personality, Wednesday is your opportunity!  Jon Montgomery, 2010 Olympic Gold Medalist and Host of the Amazing Race Canada will inspire you with his story and the message Belief – It Does a Body Good. Jon’s story will inspire you to go after what you are looking for, no matter how daunting the task may seem.

If you know a hockey enthusiast in Brandon, you will find them in the MNP Theatre at 11:00AM on Wednesday, because farmer and former Humbolt Broncos Coach, Chris Beaudry is speaking on Farm, Hockey, Stress – Discovering Your Path for Today. Chris knows stress first hand, and he also knows that it takes a lot of courage to discover what path is right for you today.  In the afternoon, Nuffield scholar Ryan Boyd will share what he is now implementing in his operation as a result of his international travels and studies.  Can we Reclaim the Prairie Landscape? starts at 2:30PM as part of the When Opportunity Knocks afternoon program.

The Innovation Showcase judging will be complete and the winners will be announced!  There are 32 contenders in seven categories, including Agronomics, Animal & Livestock, Agriculture Equipment, Agribusiness Services, Ag Tech, Farm Safety and Farm Built Solutions, sponsored by the 7 publications of Glacier FarmMedia. Opening Day Preview – What to Look For on Day One

Manitoba Ag Days is ready to welcome you #back2business on Tuesday, January 17th. “After two years of virtual shows, we are excited to see everyone in person at the Keystone Center! The 46th annual show has a fantastic speaker program and the Innovation Showcase contenders are a must-see part of the show.” said Dave Crammond, Manitoba Ag Days Board Co-Chair.

Opening day is packed with incredible opportunities to network, learn and do business!  

Don’t miss the Kickoff Breakfast, which takes place in the Great Western Roadhouse from 7:30am-9:00am on Tuesday, January 17th and is presented by Heritage Co-Op with special thanks to the Canad Inns and Q-Country 91.5 for their support. Admission is by donation and all proceeds from the kickoff breakfast will go to Ag in the Classroom – Manitoba.

The Manitoba Canola Growers Association program runs in the FCC Theatre on Tuesday morning and begins at 9:00AM with Chris Vervaet, Executive Director, Canadian Oilseed Processors Association presenting on Fuel for the Future. Chris will outline the policy landscape in North American and how this translated into environmental and economic opportunities for the canola value chain. At 10:00AM a panel discussion will provide the straight goods on The Buzz Around Economics and Agronomics of Nitrogen use in Canola. If you are looking for a way to engage your friends and family, invite them to hear comedian Big Daddy Tazz take a humorous look at life’s triumphs and tribulations. Out of my Mind begins at 11:00AM. We have local, provincial and federal dignitaries bringing greetings, beginning at 1:15PM. You will not want to leave early, because Peter Zeihan, Geopolitical Strategist and author, takes the stage at 4:00PM with his thought provoking presentation on Agriculture at the End of the World.

 

The MNP Theatre also has a full day scheduled, beginning with the Ag Days Gives Back presentations at 9:00AM. Eight rural fire departments are being awarded $2000 grants and agriculture education is being supported through three, $1000 post-secondary scholarships and a $10,000 grant to Ag in the Classroom – Manitoba. The rest of the morning is dedicated to Agriculture Diversified, beginning with Mady Adamson, a fifth-generation grain farmer, sharing Why I Wanted My Class to Learn About Agriculture at 9:30AM. Panel discussions are scheduled for 10:00AM and 11:00AM and will address the hot topics of capitalizing on innovative opportunities and filling workforce needs. Greg Peterson, better known as Machinery Pete, will give his perspective on Used Equipment is the new “NEW” at 1:30PM, as part of the Iron Revolution program on Tuesday afternoon.

Thursday, January 24th, 2019 brings the 3rd and final day of the Manitoba Ag Days 2019 show. The program will kick off at 9:00 am in the FCC Theatre with “Strategies for managing herbicide resistant weeds” with the Weed Specialist for Manitoba Agriculture, Tammy Jones. At 9:45 am Dennis Lange, Provincial Pulse Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture and John Buch, Americas Raw Material Manager with Roquette will review the “Past, present and future” of Manitoba field peas. At 10:15 am, David Mielke, Senior Analyst, with Oil World, will give us a presentation on “Global supply, demand and price outlook and impacts for Canada”. To wrap up the morning sessions in the FCC Theatre at 11:15 am, Lorne Grieger, Agricultural Engineer with PAMI, will speak on how to “Cut your losses at the front end”.
The MNP Theatre will get started at 9:30 am with Farm Management Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture, Roy Arnott with an update on “Organic crop production costs for 2019”. Directly following Roy at 10:00 am, an organic producer panel consisting of Stuart McMillan, producer, Legend Organic Farms, Travis Heide, producer, One Organic Farms and Jason Peters, Agronomist, Kroeker Farms will address the question “Can organic agriculture maintain its strong production values as farms get bigger?” Closing out the morning at 11:30 am, “The growing market for organic foods, trends and opportunities for producers” will be presented by Organic Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture, Dr. Laura Telford.
Thursday afternoon in the FCC Theatre will begin at 1:00 pm with Bruce Burnett, Director of Markets and Weather, MarketsFarm-Glacier Farm Media speaking on “Mother nature, the silent storm in the markets”. Directly following Bruce, Rob Paola, Meteorologist, with Rob’s Obs will speak on “What’s ahead weather wise for 2019” at 1:45 pm. At 2:30 pm, Soil Fertility Extension Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture, John Heard, will speak on “Matching soil moisture and fertilization strategies”. At 3:15 to close out the afternoon sessions in the FCC Theatre, Jeff Schoenau, Professor with the Department of Soil Science with the University of Saskatchewan will give his presentation on “To Micro or not to micro?”
At 1:00 pm in the MNP Theatre, Edith Frison, Business Advisor, Business Advisor with MNP LLP will be presenting on “How will the new tax on split income rules affect your farming operation?” At 1:30 pm, Brian Harper, Circle H Farms will speak on “How we use livestock as a tool to heal degraded land”. At 2:15 pm, “It’s all about learning and growing through networks” with Ryan Boyd, producer, South Glanton Farms Inc, Lydia Carpenter, producer, Luna Field Farm, Brooks White, producer, Borderland Agriculture and Amber McNish, student, Borderland Agriculture. To close out the show in the MNP Theatre, Steve Frey, Scientist, MFGA Aquanty Project, will speak on “How your farm management influences your community resiliency”.

In the FCC theatre at 9:00 am, it is time to start “Farming by your numbers” with a presentation from Darren Bond, Farm Management Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture. You can then look forward to hearing about “The future story – farm corporations” from Lance Stockbrugger, with LD Stockbrugger Farms at 9:45 am followed by Kevin Hursh, Owner of Hursh Consulting & Communications speaking about “How to be a successful medium sized farm” at 10:35 am. The morning sessions will wrap up 11:30 am with Sharon Ardron, Farm Management Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture presenting on how to use your “Farm books – not just for taxes”.
The Manitoba Wheat and Barley Growers Association will be hosting a program focusing on “Going for gold – maximizing wheat’s potential at home & on the international stage”. Cam Dahl, President of Cereals Canada, JoAnne Buth, CEO of the Canadian International Grains Institute and Patti Miller, Chief Commission of the Canadian Grain Commission will kick things off at 1:00 pm with a presentation on “Canada’s opportunities and challenges in the international wheat market”. At 1:45 pm, Anthony Parker, Commissioner of the Plant Breeders’ Rights, for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Carla St.Croix, Director of Innovation and Growth Policy Division with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada will present on “Value creation consultations: what you should know”. Directly following, at 2:15 pm, PHD student from the University of Manitoba, Amy Mangin will give a presentation on “What’s all the hype about – plant growth regulators?” At 2:45 pm, Farm Production Extension Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture, Rejean Picard, will speak about fusarium head blight and “The fungicide window for application”. Andrew Friskop, Assistant Professor and Extension Pathologist at the North Dakota State University will continue the fusarium head blight discussion at 3:00 pm with “The state side story”. Closing out the afternoon is Brennan Turner, CEO at FarmLead asking, “Are you a farm or a hedge fund?”
In the MNP Theatre at 9:00 am we will hear the “Five major changes to drones that will change everything!” with Owner of M3Aerial Productions Inc., Matthew Johnson. At 9:45 am, Head Shark with the The Shark Farm, Rob Sharkey will give his presentation on how “We’ve got an app for that!” Directly following Rob, at 10:30 am, Jason Steinley, Territory Manager, with Dutch Openers will answer the question “Which opener is right for your farm?” At 10:50 am, Senior Research Associate from Niagara College, Sarah Lepp will deliver a presentation titled “Got data – what now?” Closing out the morning at 11:30 am will be Lori Yarnell, Climate Business Manager with Climate Corporation speaking on “The evolution of the digital farming space”.
Wednesday afternoon “Let’s Talk Livestock” in the MNP Theatre with Tere Stykalo, Regional Ag Leader with MNP at 1:00 pm speaking on “Purchasing farmland – how to get the edge on the competition!” At 1:45 pm Chief Operating Officer with the Food Development Centre, Robin Young will ask “Where’s the beef?” Directly following Robin at 2:30 pm is Market Analyst, with Gateway Livestock, Anne Wasko will give us a “Cattle market update”. At 3:15 pm Livestock Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture, Pam Iwanchysko will cover “Graze anatomy – planning your grazing system from the ground up!” Closing out the afternoon is Tim Clark, Forage & Livestock Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture with information on “Drought proofing your feed supply”.
