Jon Montgomery, 2010 Olympic Gold Medalist / Host of The Amazing Race Canada @jonmonty
While Jon always wanted to be a Canadian National Team athlete, he didn’t know which sport it would be! Keeping his eyes wide open, living outside his comfort zone, trying new things and accepting the challenges that presented themselves enabled him to find his passion and his opportunity to realize his dreams. While we must be realistic about the things in life we can’t change, there are always ways in which we can optimize ourselves and our situations through creative thinking and innovation. Jon’s story will inspire others to go after what they are looking for, no matter how daunting a task it may seem.
Gene edited crops offer solutions to the increasing production challenges facing farmers around the world. Krista will discuss recent regulatory developments related to plant breeding innovations and their impact on market access for Canada’s grain sector.
At the Morden Research and Development Centre, research is underway to investigate the effect of crop rotation on the soil microbiome using metagenomics. The goal is to understand how crop management practices impact the soil microbial community and identify management practices allowing the manipulation of effective soil microbes.
As farm and equipment sizes get larger, reacting to extreme environmental conditions becomes more critical. Management decisions have to be made to get the job done in the window of time that’s available. Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute (PAMI) is currently completing two separate research projects in collaboration with Manitoba Crop Alliance that address soil compaction and grain drying to help producers make the best decisions they can. There isn’t a play book but this research aims to assist you in managing these issues on your farm.
“I can’t predict the future, because it’s the future”. We like to think of what we do at LeftField as “reconnaissance” rather than prediction. Join us as we look at market-moving factors on the horizon; from nearby to distant. These can include weather, trade, economic, political and demographic factors; some more certain than others, but all bear watching.
